Twelve points, one line

For brands

A daily game with your name on it.

Davazdah is a small daily game about real data. Each day it asks one question about the world and answers it with twelve real points from a public source. The player guesses the pattern, then predicts one more point, and sees how the least-squares line did. The same game can carry a brand's name and colors and run on the brand's own page. This page says what a brand gets, what it does not get and what it must supply.

Play the demo
One day's plot in each set of colors: Davazdah on the left, the made-up Fizzbarrow on the right. The thick colored line is the least-squares line, the filled colored point is the held-back item's real value, and the open circle is a player's prediction of it.

Fizzbarrow is a made-up brand. The name was invented for this page and stands for no real company.

The demo is Davazdah's own page with a short list of values changed: the name, one line of text, the mark, the colors, the day of No. 1, the address in the shared result and the place where a player's record is kept. It also carries a strip at the top and a foot of the page that say it is a demo. The rules, the two moves, the 42 puzzles and the scoring are the same code and the same data. Because the demo counts from its own No. 1, it shows a different puzzle from Davazdah's on the same day.

The demo keeps its record apart from Davazdah's. Playing one does not change your record in the other.

What a brand gets

One deliverable: the game as one file, under your name. In that file:

  1. Your name on the game. In the heading, in the page title and in the result players share.
  2. Your colors. The game uses thirteen colors on light screens and thirteen on dark. Yours are fitted to those, and each text color is checked for contrast (WCAG AA, at least 4.5 to 1).
  3. One line of your text under the name.
  4. The daily puzzles. One question a day, answered with real points from a public source named on the day: Davazdah's 42 puzzles, with puzzle 1 on your No. 1. After the 42nd they repeat in order, and the page says so. Two moves a day: guess the pattern, then predict one more point. The same for everyone who opens your page that day. The day is the date on the player's own device.
  5. Your own count of days. No. 1 is the day you choose.
  6. A result to share. When a player finishes, the game shows a few lines of plain text: your name, the game number, the day's question, the two scores, the total and your address. One button copies it. Where a player posts it is up to them.
  7. Two places of its own. A page on davazdah.com under your name, kept up for twelve months from delivery, and the same file for a page of your site or an address you own; either or both. The file loads nothing else: no typeface, no picture, no script from another host. It needs no server program, no database and no account system.
  8. A test report. The game's own tests are run on your version in the Chromium browser. You get the count that passed and pictures of your version at phone and desktop width.

The game exists, and the demo shows items 1 to 6 working. Fitting your colors, making and testing your file, and putting it on your page with the person who runs your site are the work this offer is for.

What players are not asked for

  • No account, no sign-up, no email address.
  • No cookies.
  • No tracking. After the page has loaded, the game's code makes no request to any host.
  • A player's record is kept in the player's own browser and nowhere else: the last finished day with its two scores and the player's two answers, the streak, the best streak, the days played and the average.

This is true of the game file. If your site or its host adds a visit counter or other scripts to its pages, that is yours to tell your players.

What it is not

  • Not a prize draw. No sweepstakes, no leaderboard, nothing to win. Scores are worked out in the player's browser and nobody checks them.
  • Not a way to collect player data. The game collects none, so there is none to hand over: no names, no email addresses, no list of players, no count of how many played.
  • Not an advertising channel. No advertising network, no ad slots, no tracking pixels.
  • Not a custom game. The rules, the two moves, the puzzles and the scoring stay as they are in Davazdah.

What you supply

  • The name as it should appear. Short works best: on a phone it shares one line with the date.
  • One line of text to sit under the name.
  • Your brand colors, as hex values.
  • Your mark as an SVG file, if you want it beside the name.
  • The page or address where the game will live, and a person who can put one file there.
  • The day that should be your No. 1.
  • The line and the links for the foot of the page, such as your site and your privacy page.
